Driving Ethical Transformation in iGaming: How Better World Casinos is Leading the Charge
4 September 2024
Reading time: 3 minutesThis article is a short version of the full report of Betterworldcasinos. com's review of the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices of UK gaming operators. The full article can be found here.
Floris Asses, Founder and CEO, Better World Casinos (BWC).
The global gaming industry has grown rapidly over the past decade, providing millions of players with many entertainment options. But as with any thriving industry, fundamental challenges exist. At World's Best Casinos, we believe the industry must evolve to be not only profitable, but also ethical, transparent and sustainable. Our mission is to guide players to online gaming brands that are committed to these values, thereby bringing positive change to the industry as a whole.
The Importance of ESG in iGaming
Environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors have become a key indicator of a company's ethical position and long-term sustainability. In an industry where the balance between profit and responsibility is as delicate as iGaming, ESG metrics are essential. BWC launched a comprehensive review of 21 leading casino and sportsbook operators to assess their ESG performance. Our goal is to provide players with clear and reliable information about which brands are committed to ethical practices and which fall short.
Key Findings from Our ESG Assessment
Our research focused on four key areas:
Transparency: We looked at the extent to which companies openly disclose their ownership, operations and ESG initiatives. Transparency is fundamental to accountability. Our research revealed a significant gap between public and private companies. Public companies generally score higher on transparency due to regulatory requirements, while most private companies provide little information.
ESG Planning and Reporting: We assessed the presence and quality of companies’ ESG plans, which look specifically at responsible gambling and which span general environmental, social and governmental factors. Many companies have published statements about responsible gaming and sustainability, but only a few provide specific data or set measurable targets.
Compliance: Compliance with regulations in areas such as marketing, privacy, security, antitrust (AML) and player protection is non-negotiable. Our research shows that all companies have faced some form of regulatory action in the past, to varying degrees. This highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing profitability with legal and ethical obligations.
Third-Party Data To get a broader perspective, we also looked at third-party reviews such as Glassdoor and CSRHub. We found that while these sources provide valuable insights, they can sometimes lack consistency or depth. Still, the CSRHUB data provided a useful benchmark, especially for companies that are otherwise difficult to assess.
Promoting Ethical Brands
After months of research, BWC identified 10 of the original 21 companies that met our minimum standards for transparency, ESG performance and compliance. These companies will be featured on BWC’s platform, where players can learn more about their commitment to responsible gaming, environmental sustainability and social justice.
But our work doesn’t stop here. We are committed to continually improving our evaluation methodology and expanding our survey to include more operators and investigate more deeply. Our goal is to set a benchmark for ethical practices in the igaming industry and hold companies accountable for their actions.
The Role of Players in Driving Change
The main motivation for our research is player power. In an industry where user experience is often homogenous, with most casinos offering the same games, payment methods and bonuses, players can make a real difference by choosing to support brands that align with their values. By choosing operators that prioritize ESG factors, players can help the industry move towards more ethical and sustainable practices.
The Future of Better World Casinos
We start with the world's best casinos. Our vision is to be the leading resource for players who want to make informed decisions about where to play. We plan to continue working with industry experts to develop more sophisticated ESG evaluation tools and make recommendations to increase transparency and accountability in the industry.
Going forward, we will focus on key areas such as responsible gambling, environmental impact and governance practices. By highlighting both exemplary practices and areas in need of improvement, we hope to promote a more responsible and conscientious igaming industry.
The iGaming industry is at a crossroads. As it continues to grow, so too must its commitment to ethical and sustainable practices. Best Global Casino is proud to be at the forefront of this transformation. By equipping players with the information they need to make responsible choices, we are helping to build a better future for our industry and for millions of customers around the world.
