Massachusetts Residents Spend the Most on the Lottery, but Ohioans Are the Most Likely to Make Their Money Back

The lottery fever has reached a new height in 2023, and Jackpot has exceeded the $ 1 billion of the $ 1 billion. The $ 176. 5 billion powerball prize given to one very lucky ticket owner in October was the second largest lottery jackpot in US history.

45 states provide lottery, and as we have found in the 2022 lottery data survey, some residents have accepted lottery than other states. Based on such an enthusiasm, we reviewed the survey to confirm what has changed.

While Massachusetts residents are spending a lot of money on the lottery, it has been revealed again that North Dakota people are restricting money on the lottery. Our survey also looks at places where residents are likely to regain money and where gamblers are most losing.

Key findings

  • Massachusetts residents spent more than 25 times per person than North Dakotan in 2021. Massachusetts has collected $ 1. 024 and 91 per person per person with 2021 (available latest) lottery sales, increasing 27 and 3 % from 2020. Then Georgia ($ 526 98 cents) and Michigan ($ 8 7 cents). North Dakota was the lowest of $ 39, 74 per person, following Wyoming ($ 54, 50) and Montana ($ 61, 99).
  • Virginia residents had the biggest jumps per capita lottery between 2020 and 2021. Virginia residents' lottery spending increased by $ 249 per person in 2020, $ 384 and 65 in 2021, and 54, 0 % in 2021. Mississippi (53, 6 %, $ 919, $ 89) and Arizona (from 53, 4 %, $ 919, $ 89) (from 35, 44 %, $ 93 to $ 200, $ 47). New York is the only state, whose lottery sales per capita decreased, down 11 % from $ 455 in 2020 to $ 404 63 in 2021.
  • Of the $ 1, 000 individual income, 5, 00 $ was spending on the states of 45 states where they had them, which vary greatly from state to state. In Massachusetts, $ 12, 44 was used for lottery purchase per $ 1, 000, with $ 9, 38 in Georgia and $ 8, 79 in South Carolina. Meanwhile, only 61 cents in all $ 1. 000 went to the North Dakota lottery, followed by Wyoming (83 cents) and Montana ($ 1, 07).
  • In the participant, Better regained 64 cents for all dollars spent on the lottery. Ohio spent all dollars and paid 72 cents while the five states paid 70 cents: Arizona, Arkansas, Aidaho, Main, and Mizouri. In contrast, the three states were less than one quarter per dollar: South Dakota (20 cents), West Virginia (22 cents), and Oregon (24 cents).
  • It was found that West Virginia has lost $ 6, 47 per $ 1, 000 (the amount of money deducted from lottery spending) per $ 1, 000 in terms of loss. Massachusetts and Lord Island have continued $ 5. 00 per $ 1, 000 and $ 4. 56. These amounts are in contrast to a loss of $ 1. 82 per $ 1, 000 in the 45 states.

How to determine whether consumer spending, income amount, and whether consumers can afford it

Lending tree researchers analyzed ticket sales (excluding fees) in 2021 to determine consumer spending by expenditure. Then, the estimated fee of the commission received when selling the winning ticket was added, and a 5. 5%commission rate was set based on the available data. (Your state fees may differ.)

  • In order to determine the amount obtained by consumers, researchers divided lottery payments per population by lottery sales per population.
  • In order to determine the amount of consumer loss, researchers have deducted lottery per capita lottery prize money from per capita lottery sales.

However, some state personal income is much lower enough to be more important, even if the overall loss is low. In order to determine which state the loss of lottery is determined, researchers compared the lottery sales to the preliminary 2021 individual income. Researchers looked at sales and losses around $ 1. 000 in state personal income.

The next state was excluded because it did not have the lottery sales:

Massachusetts residents again spend the most per capita on the lottery

Our research examined how consumers spent on scratchoffs, traditional games, video terminals, and states, including any programs, under the state lottery.

Again, the data shows that the Massachusetts residents surpass the lottery players of all other participants. 2021 (the latest available data), the state lottery sales are $ 6. 892. 00 dollars (excluding fees), $ 1. 024. 91 per person, per capita spending per person ($ 320. 42). More than three times.

Massachusetts's per capita expenditure may be related to income. This New England had the highest individual income per person in 2021. The median ($ 89. 026) of household income was 29. 0 % higher than the median household income ($ 69. 021). 021. High income may mean that the residents have a lot of disposable income.

However, with $ 526 and 98 cents, the lottery player in Peach spent almost half of Massachusetts residents. Michigan was 3rd in $ 480 per capita and 75 cents.

North Dakota’s residents spend the least per capita on the lottery

Several states' lottery spending was significantly lower than the national average. North Dakota lottery players spent the lowest per person in 2021 -$ 39. 7 4-Wyoming ($ 54. 50) and Montana ($ 61.) All three states are maintained since 2020. I'm doing it.

Specifically, the median household income in 2021 in North Dakota is $ 68. 131, slightly below the median of the United States household income ($ 69. 021), 23. 5 % lower than Massachusetts. Massachusetts purchased a lottery 25 times as North Dakota in 2021.

Similarly, the central value of household income in Wyoming and Montana is almost nationwide or less. The median household income in Wyoming is only 1. 5 % below federal income, and $ 60. 560 in Montana is below 12. 3 %. The poverty rate is more than the United States, but the Massachusetts states are below. Massachusetts may have a lot of income that can be used for discretionary expenditures, but few residents in North Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana may be.

Virginia's lottery players spent a lot of lotteries in 2021 in 2020 -$ 249, $ 384, and 65, and 54, 0 % of their spending to 65. Misissippi states in a narrow margin, which increased to the second highest (53, 6 %), $ 99, 89, $ 153 and 41. Arizona was the third highest (37, 4 %) and jumped from $ 145, 93 to $ 200, 47.

The increase in Virginia may be due to the introduction of online lottery sales that the state legalized in July 2020. In 2021, Virginia added online games. Similarly, Mississippi's state lottery is relatively new, starting with a scratc h-off game in November 2019, and has grown steadily.

In 2021, lottery spending increased in all states, except for one remarkable exception. Empire has seen a decrease of $ 404 in 2021, $ 455 in 2020, and 93 in 2020, to 11 and 3 % per capita lottery. Take s-up New York, which has decreased overall lots of lotteries, has recently experienced it. According to USA Today Network New York analysis, in 2020, the total sales of Lotto and Rashino (combined casino and lace) decreased 19 % year-on-year, which is one of the reasons COVID-19 closed. And security measures. The impact was in 2021, as the overall sales decreased again.

According to it, the number of lottery spending has increased the most.

Ohioans are the most likely to make their lottery money back

Of course, the state, which has high sales per capita, had some of the largest award payouts of lottery sales. Massachusetts residents earned $ 612 per person, won the largest prize at 7 7-3 times the $ 203, 87 lottery awards and the payouts in the whole state. Georgia was $ 349 per capita, and was ranked second in the farest, with South Carolina ($ 313, 78).

As expected, the states, which have the least spending per capita, had the least payment per person. North Dakota is the lowest in $ 21, 05 per person, followed by Wyoming ($ 30, 29) and Montana ($ 40, 02).

Prize payouts compared to dollars spent

Looking at the size of the payment compared to the sales, some states are ranked higher and lower. Despite the 11th place for the largest prize payment per capita, Ohio's lottery players have gained the largest percentage of their money. The Bachai residents have 336, $ 04 per person, and 72 cents per dollar, $ 241 and $ 43 in 202 1-12 and 5, more percentage than the 64 cent average in the 12 and 5 participants.

Arizona, Arkansaw, Aidaho, Main, Missouri.

Better in South Dakota couldn't earn much compared to the amount he spent. This is less than any of the states that are doing lots. West Virginia had the second largest victory per dollar (22 cents) following Oregon (24 cents).

Should you play the lottery? Our expert weighs in

About half of Americans buy lotteries once a yea r-multiple lotteries such as power balls and Megamirions are very high, and usually when more enthusiastic is enthusiastic. However, some Americans play the lottery on a daily basi s-8 and 1 buy the lottery once a week, Jonathan D. Cohen, "Dollar and Dream: Modern American State Lottery". Tell NPR in early 2023.

There are various incentives for frequent pla y-repayment of credit card debt, you can stop the deadloc k-habitual results may be harmful. "If you reach out to lotteries too often and spend too much money, you can have a big impact on your household," says Matt Schultz, a lending tree chief credit analyst.

"It's more money to be rewarded, such as retirement allowances, universit y-based funds, and mortgage down payments than lottery," says Schultz.

If you apply for a lottery, we recommend that you set the following restrictions:

  • Treat the lottery as entertainment. Remember that you are playing a game you can't win. "It's okay if you think of lottery as money for play and don't use too much," says Schultz.
  • Play only the amount you can lose. "If the amount you spend in the lottery will make your household a pain if you do not hit, let's stop doing it now." Probability is not advantageous for you. "
  • Make a budget for spending. "If you like lottery, secure a lottery budget for travel, concerts and game tickets, and eating out," says Schultz. "By doing this, you can avoid being involved in trouble.

Methodology

LendingTree researchers are the 2021st State State Financial Survey (U. S. Census Bureau) and the US Economic Analysis (U. S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, BEA) in 2021 Analyzed data based on preliminary estimate was analyzed. The state population is based on the 2021 American community survey (one year estimation) of the Census Bureau.

Analysts are the amount spent by residents in each state (the annual ticket sales excluding the commission, 5, 5%of the commissions), the paid amount per capita, and the state individual The lottery purchase amount, winning amount, and loss amount per $ 1, 000 are estimated. The loss is a deducted prize payment from the estimated total sales.

Since there is no lottery in the following state, a budget for spending is made from the analysis: < Span>. "If you like lottery, secure a lottery budget for travel, concerts and game tickets, and eating out," says Schultz. "By doing this, you can avoid being involved in trouble.
