After finding her with the vacuum cleaner, Elle went to the Holloway residence, where she found Billy and Heather having dinner with her parents. Billy explained that Heather had just felt sick, and Heather confirmed that she felt better. Confused, Max and Elle left the residence and returned to the Hargrove residence. Elle still suspected something was wrong, but Max assured them that nothing was wrong.

In October, Max helps the Byers family and Elle, who was taken from the Byers after Hopper was presumably killed in her moving boxes. By combining some leaves, they are able to create a rope, allowing Robin and Eddie to return to Earth. However, before Nancy and Steve can climb the rope itself, Mike's sister has Vecna. They can't find anything, but Vecna finally releases after Nancy gives her a message to deliver to Eleven and the rest of her friends. Everyone reunites, and the group of teens originating from Max's trailer reunites to spend the night and take refuge. The next morning, Max and the others learned through Nancy that Vecna's former identity was the son of Victor Creel Henry, who was recruited by Dr. Martin Brenner to become Hawkins Laboratory's original child psychomotor test and the precursor to many of the subjects, including Eleven. A tearful Nancy explained the ominous future the creature had shown her. After explaining that she had also seen four giant portals tearing through Hawkins, Max and Lucas realized that Vecna's master plan had always been hinted at by the grandfather clock, and that he was only one kill away from triggering the apocalypse.	Determined to ensure the safety of her loved ones and the world, Nancy insisted that they needed to put an end to Vecna's wretched existence, and that they needed weapons for the mission. Steve and Robin argued that Vecna was far more powerful than them, but Dustin and Lucas realized that Vecna's body could be attacked as the Dark Wizard hunts his final victim. When Robin pointed out that they had no idea who Vecna's final target was, Max confessed that while she had escaped Vecna's wrath, she was still under his curse, and suggested that they remove the Walkman to draw Vecna's attention back to themselves. Lucas immediately opposed the idea, but Max insisted that it would be fine as long as the others killed Vecna before he killed her. No one was happy with this plan, but it was all they had.
	They needed weapons to carry out their plan, so the group decided to visit a store called "War Zone" where they could be adequately armed. With Eddie's guidance, they steal the family's trailer, and the group, with seven people in the trailer, sets off for the operation. Lucas joins Max in the back seat, and initially tries to convince him to abandon his plan to compromise. Max won't let a complete stranger incur Vecna's wrath, and assures him that he will find happy memories that Vecna cannot.	In the conflict zone, Max and the others find the weapons they were looking for, but they also run into Jason and his basketball team. Jason confronts Nancy as he pulls out his shotgun, but he avoids his questions and manages to get the others out in time before he becomes suspicious. Armed with the necessary supplies, they find a secluded field, where they set up a temporary base and work on building weapons. Finally ready, they drive to the Creel House to eliminate Erica, Lucas, and Max, while the rest head back to Eddie's trailer.	Max talks to VECNA.
	At Creel House, Max waited with Lucas until she received Erica's badge, and began the first step of her plan: taking out VECNA. Max used her lantern to locate VECNA in an abandoned house, and removed her Walkman, leaving herself vulnerable. VECNA did not attack immediately, frustrating Max, who wanted to get it over with. However, while she waited for him, she decided to take a calm approach and sat down in the attic to have a "conversation" with him. As she spoke, she poured out her deepest, darkest thoughts. Not only did she make herself physically vulnerable, but she also made herself emotionally vulnerable by letting out the feelings she had been holding back for the last six months. She admitted that she had wanted Billy dead, and had imagined him crashing his car and leaving her life forever. Although she had often wished for Billy's death, Max felt guilty after he was killed by Freya, and began praying for her own death as well.	At her weakest moment, Vecna attacked her, taking the body of Lucas, who had been standing nearby while Max spoke. In her vision, Vecna taunts her, telling her that her death will destroy the world. At this point, Max realizes she has been tricked and, unable to snap out of the trance Vecna has cast upon her, begins to flee from the monster before her.	Meanwhile, Jason enters the attic to confront Lucas, who has been watching Max. As the two begin to fight, Jason accidentally fires at Max's Walkman, destroying it, thus cutting off her hope of salvation in the real world.
