Pokémon world in relation to the real world

Map of Japan showing the four major Pokémon territories in Japan and their minor territories. Kitakami is not included due to its ambiguous location compared to the other regions.

Map of North America shows the two core Pokémon regions in North America. Map of Europe shows the three core Pokémon regions in Europe and their subregions

The designs of the nine major Pokémon regions, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn/Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, and Paldia, are surprisingly similar to real-life regions, both geographically and demographically, and are even officially stated to be based on specific locations. The first four regions and Kitakami are modeled after small areas of Japan, Unova and Alola are modeled after parts of the United States, Kalos is modeled after France, Galar is modeled after the United Kingdom, and Paldia is modeled after the Iberian Peninsula, which consists of Spain, Portugal, and Andorra.

In addition, for the side series games, it has been confirmed that the motif for Ore, which appears in Pokémon Coliseum and Pokémon XD, is Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States.
