Arabian Nights, Bristol Old Vic, until 6 January. An exploration of the power of storytelling, this production features a cracker team of writer Sonali Bhattacharya (Chasing Hares, Young Vic), director Blanche McIntyre (All's Well That Ends Well, RSC) and puppet designer Samuel Wilde (I Want My Hat Back, Little Angel). It promises to be a playful adaptation of a classic tale of resilience and hope.
Battersea Arts Centre, London, until 24 December. Animals hibernate in corners and surprises lurk in corridors in Battersea Arts Centre's immersive new production. Puppets and actors interact with wandering audience members, evoking a sense of exploration and play. Solstice is open to all ages 3 and over. Hansel and Gretel Lyric Theatre, Belfast Until 6 January Music and magic lead Hansel and Gretel into a dark forest. Written by Derry Girls star Tara Lynn O'Neill, this play follows a lost brother and sister and a mischievous little mouse who stumble upon the lair of a sweet witch. With music and lyrics by Katie Richardson and a high-energy ensemble, this is a creative production. Santa Claus Must Die! Christmas crackers... Josh Pugh photo Josh Pugh lives in Christmas runs from 7th to 21st December in various venues. The tour kicks off in Colchester. Technically, the annual Mixed Bill Show magazine isn't particularly festive this year, featuring headline slots from Ed Gamble (Masterful) and David O'Doherty (always fun). It's also a chance to test out some up-and-coming stand-up, from the surprisingly good Josh Pugh to the dashing Kayla Gray. Horrible Stories Horrible Christmas Terry Deary's gag-packed riffs on storybooks have provided ample fodder for comedy on stage and screen for decades. This production from Birmingham Stage Company is a whistle-stop guide to Christmas's weird past, from Tudor fare to Puritan party prodding. Rachel Arrostie From the sidelines... Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands. Photo Johan Persson Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands Sadler's Wells, London, 5 December-20 January, touring 25 May Directed by Tim Burton, this dance version of the 1990 film is a sweet treat, full of retro-kitsch style, big-hearted characters and a score that borrows from Danny Elfman's original soundtrack. It's hard not to empathize with Edward's tragic story, whose talent for topiary has found an unlikely home in suburban America. Scottish Ballet: Cinderella Christopher Hampson's new production tweaks the zoosh a bit to include the Cinderella storyline: Cinderella can be either the woman who meets the prince or the man who falls in love with the princess. But Prokofiev's stunning music remains the same. Lindsay Winship
