Whether you like wizards, sword and ship warriors, radial wastelands, vampires, or text-heavy isometric stories, RPGs are a genre that never disappoints. Turning off the number of role-playing games, there's something for everyone - we've tried to reflect that in our list of the best RPGs on PC. The last couple of years have been great for RPGs, so this list has some absolute classics, as well as some completely new games. Plus, with rumors that Dragon Age: Dread Wolf is finally coming out and outer space in Epic Starfield in the rearview mirror, there's still plenty to look forward to. Whatever else happens, this list will showcase the 50 best RPGs you can download and play on PC right now.

Our main rule when making a list like this is that it's not about games that made a huge impact when they were released, but games that are still fun to play today. We don't want to gateknocking too much on what defines the genre. RPGs can be entertainment games, slow-paced stories reminiscent of visual novels (or even actual novels), or the unique style and action of Japanese RPGs.

Some may yell at me for including an Assassin's Creed game on this list, but honestly, I'd like to show some restraint. The AC games have undergone a bit of a renaissance since Origins in 2017, overhauling much of their core design and making each subsequent installment sharper, harder, and more entertaining. In the process, UBI brought RPG elements to the surface, and Valhalla is arguably the pinnacle of the series and its new direction.

Valhalla is set in Anglo-Saxon England. It's a very vivid but gloomy landscape, reminiscent of a season of mist and ripe fruit, providing a great backdrop for the story of a Viking raider who is gaining claim to an England that we know will eventually be destroyed. The main story is epic, with betrayal, gods, monsters, and a mythical endgame DLC. Eivor is a big blonde warrior who can be either gender, but is a charismatic protagonist no matter who you cut. Aside from the over-the-top cream of the combat that can be the most violent series, there is also a chance to turn the tide even further. As a raider, you will sail up and down the river in a boat with your trusty crew (and cat), raiding as a team. You can also choose dialogue options to make your own Eivor more than a lovable rogue or a straight-laced stalwart. You can level up to an undercover assassin, a brawler, or even a long-time master. And all the while, you're trying to build the village of Ravensthorpe and make a new home for you and your companions. 49. Diablo 4

What else should you play if you like this: Diablo 2 reigned supreme in previous versions of this list, and I still prefer Diablo 3 in many ways. Diablo 3 is still fun, but probably not the best. Definitely check out the latest season.

Diablo IV is an incredibly clever ARPG experience that will provide hours of skeleton-solving entertainment. The map is vast, covering a variety of biomes (though the twisted mud is a big feature). When dusk falls, you can activate different types of demonic instincts. Exactly how you do it is up to you, as Diablo IV has an incredibly flexible character build system that is its distinguishing feature. Whether you adventure alone or with a team, you can face brutality/ruthlessness/sourcelessness. Are you struggling with boss battles with your DPS Necromancer? Rebuild it with regeneration and crowd control and give it another go!

Little things like dashing and dodging make a big difference in gameplay, and because it's a live service, tweaks and new adventures are constantly being made and added. It's also incredibly easy to jump in and out of the multiplayer, which is perfect for a series known for its multiplayer. The sound design is as great as ever, and the whole game has a solid feel to it that's strangely beautiful. The story, like many ARPGs, is something you can pick and choose depending on how you feel like playing, but having the main villain be a mother with a haunted demon that makes everyone strangely horny is a pretty shocking hook.

48. Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom

Other games to play: Few games can match the breadth of ideas in Revenant Kingdom, but if you want more strategic combat, try The Chronicles of Valkyrie. If you want a bit more city-building fun, imagine a city with a lot of customization and just a little bit of real-time combat... check out the builder in Dragon Quest 2.

The best PC JRPGs have often found their first taste of life on other platforms, but Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom feels like it was born for this. On the surface, it looks like a standard anime JRPG: cute Ghibli Studios characters, a cat protagonist, a global plot, and a bright, colorful art style. But at its core, it's a game that takes all the tropes that are staples on the PC, from city-building to real-time strategy battles. Of course, it doesn't delve deep enough into these elements to bother the best games in the genre, but building your own kingdom, recruiting villagers from other towns, constructing special human buildings, and occasionally marching out to defend the land from unwanted invaders is a welcome addition and change of pace to an otherwise pretty traditional JRPG. It's also a lot more exciting than battling and collecting Pokémon monsters like its predecessor, Wrath of the White Witch. Revenant Kingdom also improves on a weakness of White Witch by giving its AI-controlled companions actual brains. Its broad plot may be more familiar territory than some of the other JRPGs on this list, but with so many PC-friendly elements fed back into its core systems, Revenant Kingdom remains one of the most refreshing JRPGs I've played in years.

47. Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask Of The Betrayer
