The Future of Sports: Mike Smith of Sportradar On The New Emerging Technologies That Are Disrupting the World of Sports
I'm a person who likes to speak. Sometimes it is much more important to be more concise than to be complicated, and it doesn't have to express all ideas. Business calls have ruled the rule that only two SPORTRADAR employees can talk while the customers are talking. Even if you have the best ideas or what you want to say, once the two team members speak, they will be interrupted and have customers talk. This is important to prevent conversations from becoming unilateral. I think this rule is thanks to my old colleague Mike Orson. This is especially useful for Zoom calls.
The new technology has changed our sports and watching games. Sensors, wearable tech, video assistant referee (VAR), instant replays, etc. are examples of new technologies that have changed sports play and watching. This interview series, entitled "The future of sports, a new emerging technology that destroys the sports world," reveals the sports world, such as sports leaders, athletes, sports technology experts, and sports equipment manufacturers. We are talking to those who can talk about the new technologies.
As part of that, I interviewed Mike Smith of SPORTRADAR.
Mike Smith is the US advertising category of SPORTRADAR, supporting the U S-based advertising client to make the most of the unique advertising opportunity in the United States. He has almost 15 years of experience in the field of sales and digital advertising. Before that, he was a national sales manager of a publisher solution on the digital advertising platform.
Thank you for your cooperation in this interview series! Before entering the interview, the reader wants to know you a little better. Can you tell me a little about how you started your "back story"? < SPAN> I like to speak. A few years ago, I worked for a software company that sells clou d-based solutions for restaurant companies. At that time, a friend was working for an advertising agency and was invited to work under him. If I could sell clou d-based solutions to a restaurant company, I could explain digital advertisements to newspaper companies. So, when I entered the digital advertising, I went around the country to teach newspaper companies how to sell digital advertising, and after the sale, we used our services. So I started to focus on selling the rapidly emerging programmatic advertising and selling the Demand Side Platform (DSP). I have less to teach and talk about sales methods, and I often help to get troubleshooting and navigate the situation that changes every moment.
Later, I took advantage of the skills of digital advertising cultivated in my previous job and started working in SPORTRADAR.
Could you tell me the most interesting episode since you started your career?
When SPORTRADAR gave a lecture at a conference that revealed the home dynamic digital function, Adomni, our partner, utilized its functions to post conference advertisements and our presentations at the top of Uber. 。 Suddenly, friends and family found my face at the top of a taxi. The most impressive thing is when a friend who hasn't been contacted for 15 years gets in touch. He gave me an email while riding a bus in New York, and said he saw my face in the next taxi. It was a completely different experience than in the newspaper in the fourth grade of elementary school. It's definitely better.
Could you tell me your favorite "Quote Life Mouron"? Also, can you tell us how it was related to your life?
I think the whole quotes are operated by the students of "C". "C" was Al McGaia, and he was a famous basketball coach of Market University in the 1977 basketball championship. In fact, at that time, my mother was playing a team band flute, so we were a big fan of the market and Al McGaia. "
The relevance of this quote is that ideas and efforts are all. Great ideas and strong work will be more important than the performance of the secon d-year junior high school.
For me, it was always a big idea, working hard, and then everything else fell on the roadside.
Everyone cannot succeed without any help on the way. Have you been grateful to the specific person who helped you until now? Please tell me the episode.
After graduating from college, almost all the work I got was obtained through my vast support network. From the first work at a special support school to now, for more than 20 years, my career is thanks to my efforts, a little luck, and the people who believed in me.
As my father always says, "If you pay for 5 cents, you'll be doing a job worth a tens of dollars."
Are there any specific books, movies, or podcasts that have a big impact on you? Have you ever been greatly affected by the book, movies and podcasts?
Soccer Nomics I grew up in football and is a new person's enthusiastic fan. This book is basically a soccer version of Money Ball. He saw the result of the match and thought what was most important for the winning team. In a section, there was a story that fans were furious when the team got a corner kick. In fact, athletes rarely score in a corner kick, but in general, corner kicks are a memorable goal for fans. Most of the goals are due to their own turnover.
This book shocked me because it began to focus on data and analysis of sports as a whole. Now, there are fields and industries specializing in elucidating correlation. For example, the NBA is a dramatically different game based on the idea that 34 % of 34 % is better than 50 %. Looking at the league now, it's completely different from 15 to 20 years ago. Working at a sports data company allows everything to fit.
You are successful as a business leader. What are the three features that you think is most useful for your success? Please tell me the episodes and examples of each.
The ability to maintain informatio n-In the field of digital advertising where everything changes almost every day, including technical terms and important abbreviations, the ability to find answers, find, and hold that information was important for me. < SPAN> For me, it was always a big idea, working hard, and then everything else fell on the roadside.
